Circle dance
Circle Dance
In all of the earlier societies which experienced themselves as communities, dancing in a ring was at the heart of life. People danced not to show off but to connect.
All disputes were put to one side while people took hands, found a common rhythm and moved together, becoming as one body.
Today this dancing goes a step further, drawing on music and dances from all continents, adding dances specially created to be like a moving meditation (stillness in motion), circle/world dances are non–competitive, require no partner or particular skill.
There are groups all around the world – see www.circledancenetwork.org.uk
Stefan and Bethan are among the earliest sacred / circle dance teachers and are known around the world for their clear, encouraging facilitation and their many vivid choreographies.
Many cultures have traditional dances which call for collective dancing within a circle. This helps to strengthen community bonds and encourages togetherness.
For many participants there is an extra dimension which can be described as spiritual. A "defragmentation" as body, mind, and feelings are harmonised. This may culminate in an unexpected sense of wellbeing and peace.
Bethan and Stefan teach traditional dances from many countries, including the Balkans, Greece, Israel, Russia, and France. And Bethan and Stefan have created over 200 original dances – now widely known – in which anyone can participate.
They have collected a library of rare recorded music for both traditional and contemporary circle dances. They include songs and live music played on accordion, guitar and frame drums; evocative music from all continents.
Circle dances can be energetic and lively or gentle and reflective. The aim always is to experience the joy of dancing with others and to create a sense of well–being.
Anyone of any age or ability can circle dance. Each dance is taught, there is no audience and everyone is welcome. So come on your own or with a friend (you do not need a partner) and join in.
There is a worldwide network of groups offering circle dance, sometimes known as sacred/circle dance. To get more info or to find a local class see www.circledancenetwork.org.uk
