On the role of voice & song in reconciliation Are you a singer interested in working with groups facing conflict? This is the first event of its kind: a participation-based five day residential specifically designed to develop the role of songs and voicework in enabling peace. • Reaching through barriers between alienated people to create mutual trust • Cultivating inner harmony and resilience
CULFORD SCHOOL Nr Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk Friday 27th Oct - Wednesday 1st Nov 06 History shows us that talking alone may be fruitless. People are debating without a foundation of trust. But singing in harmony is a time-tested way of passing beyond differences towards closeness. You are invited to a five day residential to explore new tools for reconciliation. The course integrates practical with inward aspects of peace, so the meditative/contemplative dimension of voice, chant and song plays an integral role. No partner and no prior experience of circle dance is needed. As this is a structured and sequential course we require people to come for the whole event. Choir leaders, natural voice facilitators, community workers and newcomers are equally welcome to take part, and no partner is needed. The goal is to deepen understanding and practice in the use of singing and sound to support people who feel mutually alienated. Peace is seen as a dynamic and lively process which may include conflict, based on respect for diversity and for voices from the margins. World harmony songs ranging from soft and tender to dynamic and ecstatic, group improvisations and soundscapes, vocal games, chants, prayers and mantras are incorporated to build a shared culture of safety, pleasure, release and finally at-one-ness. We passionately hope that the benefits might radiate out into our fear-gripped and fragmented societies, here and abroad. If you feel drawn to this theme, please book early on, because of limited numbers.
CHRISSY PARSONS-WEST, HELEN ROLFE, KEN MASTERS & STEFAN FREEDMAN will introduce a series of workshops on voice and song in reconciliation: Chrissy: Successful London and Norfolk voice coach, composer and arranger, director of Norwich community choir "Hearts & Voices" - has taught all ages from 2 to 82 and all abilities from rising professionals to "can't sing" groups - gleeful, encouraging and a terrific blues singer!
Helen: Performer in Heartbeat choir and teacher of peace songs and wonderful vocal harmonies from Europe and beyond. From Sri Lankan background, her roots in Yogic breath and body work give a quality of deep serenity and commitment to her facilitation.
Ken: qi gong master, singer, dance leader and wind player. He is also a passionate Action Researcher, having ongoing contact with bereaved families peace networks in Palestine and Israel. Ken's years as a popular Sociology lecturer enrich his work in "voice and movement with presence".
Stefan: internationally acclaimed teacher, multi-instrumentalist and the instigator of this event. His empowering approach stems from his experience of conflict resolution and his wide musicality. He relishes improvisation, responding to the group, and instantly accompanying any new tune on guitar ! There will be complementary optional workshops in Meditation and Qi Kung, and a sister event running in parallel, themed Peace through dance. The two related events will overlap and interweave, with shared meals, group discussion and evening entertainments. Evening programme highlights: harmonies from around the world, easy circle dancing - sometimes carefree and wild, sometimes transcendent with a spiral of candles - fireside songs, cabaret and Halloween Party (with drumming and free-dance). We plan to balance the focus of workshop sessions with some tremendous fun. There'll be a late nite live-music cafe scene and a dash of Salsa ! Our special guest is Luke Bermingham From Dublin who will host late-nite singing sessions. Guitarist & composer, Luke ( writer of "Gentle Return Of An Optimist" ) is well loved for his honey-sweet voice and his wide range of songs which he encourages all to sing or harmonise with. Exhibitions and short presentations from a spectrum of peace-promoting groups will help us to focus our intentions outwards towards the wider world.
